Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) originated from Japanese Jiu Jitsu due to the concepts and innovations made primarily by Helio Gracie and his sons from Brazil. Helio learnt Japanese Jiu Jitsu as a young man, but due to his small and frail physical frame he modified the techniques to suit smaller, weaker practitioners. The techniques are primarily based on leverage and good body position. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is famous for its many submission holds but also for its ability to escape from bad positions.
