Here at Progressive Self Defence academy we present MMA as a modern Martial Art but we teach it with traditional values, as we do with our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Kickboxing classes. We expect our students to treat each other with courtesy and respect.
MMA is predominantly 3 or 4 Martial Arts that have proven their effectiveness in both the combat sports and fitness arenas. These arts are Thai Boxing, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and wrestling.
Each of these arts are worth studying and offer great benefits, but the value of MMA is that it takes the core from each of them and allows the MMA student to train in and become effective across these ranges.
The real skill in MMA is knowing when to switch from one art to the other and to develop the ability to move smoothly through the ranges as the opportunity presents itself.
In Progressive Mixed Martial Arts (PMMA) you learn kickboxing, clinching, takedowns, ground’n’pound and submission grappling.
The classes are taught in a fast, high intensity format, and of course due to the combat nature of MMA, much of the training is full contact. This does not mean heavy reckless contact though, all our PMMA classes are taught in a constructive supportive environment where we endeavour to ensure each student, male and female, not only learn MMA but learn how to train MMA safely.
